Post independence India saw a significant development in Indian fiction-writing in English though it was expected that English as a language would leave India too, once the British quit the sub-continent. In the Vintage Book of Indian Writing , Salman Rushdie claimed that India’s best writing since independence may have been done in the language of the departed imperialists. The pre-Independence Indian English fiction had nationalism as the major theme. However, post Independence Indian fiction is influenced by several other elements like alienation, partition motif, subaltern, women’s issues, etc. In fact post independence saw the genre blossoming and blooming with the advent of new writers and their exploration of new arenas of expression. Added to this, are the application of several genres in making a critical assessment of the Indian English fiction as an influence of Western literary theories.

The present anthology offers a broad spectrum of scholarly articles on the contemporary spectrum of Indian English fiction. (what Indian English fiction is today.) The anthology includes critical studies of Women Novelists, Partition Literature, Dalit Writings, Writings on the issue of insurgency in North-East, Popular Fiction, Diasporic Writings, Fiction translated from other regional languages, etc. Prominent and internationally renowned women literary figures like Anita Desai, Arundhuti Roy, Kiran Desai, Jhumpa Laheri, Kamala Markandaya, etc. have drawn the attention of the researchers in this volume. Scholarly articles on R.K. Narayan, Rohinton Mistry, Makaranand Paranjape, Shashi Tharoor, Arvind Adiga and others are also included in the collection. A section is devoted to the partition motif, another on the study of popular literature while some space has been devoted to a psychoanalytical study of two novels by two researchers. A panoramic look of the contemporary post-Independent Indian English fiction reveals the changing themes and styles of its pioneers and its modern exponents. The present anthology is an attempt to shed light on this evolving and transforming genre of contemporary Indian English fiction that has emerged as one of the leading literary voices of the world.
What is striking about the anthology is that it accommodates research articles from Central, South, East and North-East India. Thus the anthology reflects how the present-day scholars across the country study the post Independence Indian fiction in English. Another feature of the anthology is its venture to give equal preference to the study of both the eminent writers of the past as well as that of the present generation thereby giving the reader an opportunity to make a comparative study of the themes and techniques of presentation of Indian English fiction.
